THE KEEPING OF RECORD IN A STATE OF CULTURE

In these series, I photograph remnants of antiquities from Greece,Turkey, and Italy and pair them with images of events from other times and places.  Each pairing (collision) embodies a different type of conversation; sometimes narrative, sometimes formal, always relating to the photograph’s unique ability to still the moment and mark a passing.

These classical figures represent a vast archive, a collection that leads to a Western origin story.  This archive has a veiled and mythical relationship within the time that I live.  It is my point of creation to choreograph new relationships with these objects, to create new contexts with other cultural and temporal signs.

teaching philosophy

Photography is a discipline that is rich in both process and dialogue; a tool for an enormously wide range of expressive postures. My role as a teacher is to introduce students to a diversity of processes and image making strategies, while at the same time introducing them to the complexity of political, esthetic, and philosophical discourses that surround the medium. Discussion surrounding the approaches and ideas of important contemporary artists is integral to my teaching, as is the study of critical view points within the medium. I am interested in providing a learning atmosphere wherein students are encouraged to make informed choices regarding their personal role as an artist. Once direction is established in more advanced students and graduate students, my role is to facilitate discussion of their work, with the goal of helping them become successful in executing their chosen strategies and directives.

expectations of students

Students at all levels are expected to engage in a high degree of rigor toward their understanding of the medium, and toward the advancement of their ideas and personal practice. Students are asked to write and speak critically about their own work and that of others, and to develop an articulate language surrounding issues of the medium and its various stances within art and culture. Students are asked to work hard, to maintain high expectations of themselves, and to engage fully and with serious intent in their study of photography and in their own practice.
