The sculpture area at the University of Oregon exposes students to a wide range of sculptural strategies and forms. Undergraduate courses include woodworking, metal fabrication, foundry, mold-making, and non-traditional media. Courses are offered at the elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels. Thirty to sixty students are enrolled in sculpture courses each term.
Students who decide to work towards a BFA will meet the requirements for a BA and then continue their studies for a fifth year. During this year, BFA candidates take three additional art history courses and complete a BFA terminal project. These projects are usually completed and exhibited during the Spring term of the fifth year. The majority of these exhibitions take place in the Laverne Krause Gallery.
graduate study in sculpture
The Sculpture facilities at the University of Oregon include an individual studio space for each graduate student which is part of a large, shared graduate student studio area. We have an area for making ceramic shell molds, a foundry, a small woodworking shop, a small welding facility, and a blacksmithing facility (which is shared with the jewelry area). Courses in ceramic sculpture are offered through the ceramics area.
Our focus is on providing a community environment in which graduate students have the opportunity to pursue their own work in sculpture while being able to exchange information and ideas with other students and faculty members.
