In an open studio environment Art majors and non-majors explore a wide range of fiber materials and techniques in a community of common interest and respect. The curriculum reflects the deep history and diverse roots of today's artform. Besides western traditions, students are introduced to knowledge and skills from Asia, Africa, Latin America and Native America.

UO FibersEspecially in the lower division classes the emphasis is on breadth of knowledge, design, craft and critical review. As students discover the visual language of fibers, they develop their personal expression and critical eye. Textile history and contemporary issues are part of all the courses.

graduate study in fibers

Graduate studies require a minimum of two years and lead to the MFA in Fibers. Generally the first year is devoted to expanding the breadth of knowledge and skills, and the second year to an in-depth inquiry, the terminal creative project. Terminal Creative Projects in Fibers range from traditional tapestry to fiber installation and performance, from inquiry into Native American basketry techniques to computer-aided textile design, from manipulation of natural fibers to experimentation with new materials. The Fibers Area has worked with the Department of Theater Arts and the Department of Dance on joint projects.

UO Fibers Course work is divided between off-loom, dyeing, and weaving. Besides design and technique, all the fiber courses address textile history and contemporary issues. The regular offering is enriched with visiting artist workshops, seminars, and field trips. A three-week intensive silk weaving course at the Foundation Lisio in Florence, Italy, is offered in the Summer program. Other regularly offered courses support the Fibers curriculum: Non-Silver Processes in Photography, Papermaking, Mask Making, Pattern Construction, History of Costume in Theater Arts, Installation, and Performance.
